[2021] 미국인턴 J1비자 도전기 #002 스폰서 면접 질문 정리, 후기

1년 6개월(18개월) 트레이니 자격으로 미국인턴 J1비자 회사 합격후 TOL(Training Offer Letter)에 서명을 한 후 수속비 500만원을 입금하고 일주일 정도 지나서 스폰서 기관에서 이메일을 받았다.

 

 

이메일에는 12분 정도 영어로 J1 비자 관련해서 오리엔테이션 설명 영상을 시청한 후 퀴즈를 풀어서 제출을 해야 했고, 이후 스폰서 기관 면접관과의 면접 일정을 잡기 위한 메일을 받아서 이름, 스카이프 아이디 등의 정보 입력후 제출하고 거의 곧바로 일정 확정 메일을 받았다. 퀴즈 내용은 간단한 내용으로 4개 객관식이었고, 담당 코디네이터 이름 선택, 오티 영상 보고 그 누구의 도움 없이도 퀴즈 풀었음에 체크 하고 전송하면 끝이었다. 오티 영어 영상은 스폰서 기관에서 직접 만든 거고 당연히 한국어 자막없이 all 영어였지만 천천히 말해줘서 이해하는데 크게 어려움은 없었다.

 

 

 

 

그리고 추가적으로 비자 12개월 혹은 18개월 기간이 끝나고 grace period 라고 30일동안 자유롭게 미국내 여행 가능한 기간이 주어지는데 이게 인턴십 시작 전 30일에도 동일하게 적용된다는 걸 오티 비디오 보고 처음 알게 됐다. 앞 30일 주어지는 것도 일 시작하는 날짜에 따라서 좀 다르기는 하겠지만 어쨌거나 좋은 듯.

 

 

 

 

퀴즈 끝나니까 금방 확인후 인터뷰 예약 링크를 메일로 보내줬다. 아마 아직 미국 기준으로 업무 시간이어서 확인후 빠르게 답을 준 듯. 나는 담당 코디네이터가 아닌 그녀의 동료와 인터뷰 일정을 잡았는데, 나보다 먼저 같은 스폰서 기관에서 진행하신 분은 나랑 코디네이터도 동일하고 인터뷰도 코디네이터 본인과 진행했다고 한다. 흠. 아무튼 상세 페이지 보면 안에 영어가 아니라 스페인어로 세부사항이 뜨는데 ㅠㅠ 이건 나도 어떻게 해야 하는지 모르겠다 ㅠㅠ 내가 키보드를 영어/스페인어/일어/한국어를 다 깔아둬서 그런지 ㅠㅠ 언어설정이 매번 자기 마음대로 바뀐다..... 전에 구글맵 확인할 때는 한 화면에 4개국어가 다 등장.... ㅠ

 

 

아무튼 제일 가까운 이틀뒤 금요일 23일을 보니 예약 가능한 시간들이 한국 시간 기준으로 나왔고 마지막인 새벽 6시를 선택했다. 그 이전 4시 이런 시간대로 하게 되면 그냥 아예 밤 새야 할 거 같아서. 시간 선택후 이름, 성, 이메일주소, 스카이프아이디, 선호하는 호칭(Ms.라고 써서 보냄) 기입후 전송하니 마지막 화면으로 예약 확정과 예약 일자, 시간이 확인됐다.

 

 

이후 에이전시에 예약했다고 말하니 스폰서 면접 관련 예상질문에 대한 5페이지짜리 파일을 보내줘서 그거 읽으면서 대답할 내용 생각해봤다. 대단히 색다른 건 없었고 스폰서 기관은 진짜 이상하거나 거짓말하는 거 같다는 느낌이 드는 게 아니면 통과시켜준다고는 했지만 그래도 영어로 면접 보는 거니까 긴장되기는 되더라. 

 

 

그래서 어떤 식으로 대답할지 예상질문들 보면서 생각나는대로 그냥 영어로 타이핑해봤다. 안 보셔도 되고 그냥 영어 얼마나 못해도 뽑아주는지 궁금하신 분들은 한 번 읽어보셔도 될 듯. 실제 면접에서도 저런 식으로 대답했다.

 

1. 학적관련 질문중 - 이수과목중 인턴십 연관 과목 : business english, english conversation

 

2. admission to the school (대학 입학 년도) 2009.

 

3. any extra curriculum activities you did in colloege? (동아리활동)

Unfortunately, I couldn't do extra curriculum activities in college.
Because I had to earn money from lots of part time job for my tuition(투이션/학비).

And also I had to save some money for going to working holiday in Japana after my graduation.

But I aslo could meet lots of good people from the jobs and could get many lectures.

So I don't regret with it at all :)

 

4. Favorite subjects in college? 
Well, my favorite subjects in college was the japanese writing class with a native japanese professor. 
We had lots of topics from the professor every week and I really liked to write in foreign lanuage.

And If I could write a good one, he let me read my writing in front of the classmates. 

That was very fun and good classes to learn japanese :)

 

5. What kind of computer programs can you handle?

I can handle ms word, excel, powerpoint for my job.

and then, also I can handle some programming languages like javascript, python like that.

 

6. I choose this internship program because I had some american friends in Korea and

they told me US is different with Korea or Japan.
So oneday I wanted to visit there and have more cultural experiences too.

And I found this program and this program can provide me internship experience in the US, 

and on weekends, I can meet friends there and travel there also.

And actually I lived in Japan for 18 months and Chile for one year before. 

That improved my language skills sooo much and I really had good memories there.

So with this program, I think I can and I will have nice new experiences and 

improve my english too! I hope so bad haha

 

7. Yes, they have branches in Korea, Mexico, Brasil aslo. 

And I'm really interested in logistics industry. So with the host company,

I think I can learn many real things, not in a book, from supervisor and my coworkers.

and when I train there, I should speak in Korean and English. 

But they told me like in California there are so many latin people

also they have latin customers so if I want and need, I can speak in spanish with them also :)

So with work experience and improving languages, that will be the best choice to me.

 

8. How long will you stay in USA?

Of course I'm planning to stay in the US for 18 months, work, travel, meet friends like that.

And after 18 months, I heard I can have 30 days of grace period

that means I can travel for 30 days without working :) 

so I want to fly to another states in the US cuz America is very very huge country so

only with two or three days of weekends, It's not enough time to know everywhere.

So I will plan my 30 days or maybe 3 weeks travel for knowing America more during 18months in Cali.

 

9. Yes, that's my agency and they're helping me with this internship program. 

 

10. How do you find out about the host company? 
My agency recommended the host company that they have new opening :)

So I checked their opening and some information about the company

and I sent my resume then got a job interview.

 

11. Where are they located?

They located L.A. in California.

 

12. What kind of business(or industry) are they in?
they are in logistics industry. 

 

13. My supervisor is ㅇㅇㅇ. Yes, I met him over the Skype because of the job interview. 
He is a Korean also so we could talk in Korean. He read my resume and we talked about

my responsibilites there and my language and computer skills.

 

14. What kinds of training will you be receiving?

I will be receiving a training in Business administration in logistics industry.

 

15. Are you going to study English doing internship?
Yes, now we can talk in english and I also have some native speakers friends of english.

but i still feel like i'm not enough good at english :'(

so during this program, i wil try to learn and improve my english more.

and also during the training at company, I have to speak in english and

after the work also there will be lots of native speakers everywhere : )

so I think i will learn more and more everyday.

 

16. What are you going to when you complete your internship?
after the internship, and after my grace period, I'm gonna back to Korea.

totally 19 months in abroad. i must miss my family and friends.

so first go back to my country, and will have some good relax time with them.

and then I think I will find a job in Seoul with this experience :)

 

17. Intenship expenses:

How much did it cost you? 

I had to pay like 5million wones in Korean money. I think in dollars, it will be like 4400 dollars.

 

How(or where) did you get this money?

I have my own saving. So I paid all from my saving.

 

18. Do you know where(what city) you will have your visa interview?
Yes, I do. In Seoul.

 

Do you know what are the required documents for visa application?

Yes, my passport, DS-160, DS-2019, TIFF, SEVIS receipt, reservation paper of my interview and my photo.

면접 진행 후

 

거의 못자고 5시 30분에 일어나서 옷만 흰 블라우스 입고 카메라 앞에 앉았다. 5:50쯤 스카이프로 10분뒤 진행 가능한지 물어보는 메시지가 와서 그렇다고 대답하고 실제 면접은 6:05쯤 시작됐다. 면접관 남자는 프렌들리했고 잘 생겼고 내가 말할 때마다 잘 웃어줘서 긴장이 확 풀렸다. 새벽 6시에 일어나서 진행되는 면접이었음에도 불구하고 생각보다 영어가 술술 나와서 다행이었다.

 

 

또 내가 칠레에서 살았었는데 내가 여행갔던 곳에 면접관도 여행갔던 적이 있어서 그런 이야기랑 일본작가 추천 등등, 면접 외의 사적인 부분에 대한 이야기도 즐겁게 나누면서 재미있게 진행됐다. 결과 통지가 아직 따로 되지는 않았지만 전화 끊기 전에 "캘리포니이에서 잘 지낼 수 있을 거 같다." 라고 하던 걸 보니 문제없을 거 같다.

 

 

그럼 20분 넘는 시간동안 질문한 내용들 중 기억에 남아있는 것들.

제일 좋아하는 일본인 작가 누구인지

✅ 무난하게 무라카미 하루키 이야기 하니까 자기도 한 권 읽어봤대서 소설보단 에세이가 더 재밌다고 추천해줬음

 

왜 물류 쪽으로 관심 갸지게 됐는지

✅ 대답할 때 일본, 칠레 등에서 살면서 다양한 경험을 하고 외국어 스킬도 쌓이게 되면서 외국어를 활용할 수 있는 직업쪽으로 생각하다보니 무역, 물류 쪽으로 관심을 가지게 됐다고 함

 

호스트 컴퍼니 수퍼바이저랑 이야기 해봤는지, 무엇을 이야기했는지

✅ 면접때 했다, 캘리 생활, 일할 때 나의 직무 관련 내용들, 나의 해외생활들, 컴퓨터 스킬, 외국어 스킬에 대해 이야기했다

 

에이전시 이름을 아는지, 내용을 만족하는지, 얼마를 냈는지

✅ 안다, 만족한다, 500만원

 

대사관에서 200만원정도 재정보증을 원한 거다 가능한지

✅ 문제없다

 

비용에 포함되는 항목들을 아는지

✅ 안다, SEVIS FEE랑 각종 서류 만드는 비용 등등

 

왜 미국을 선택했는지

✅ 남미, 아시아에서 살아봤고 좀 색다른 경험 하고 싶었다. 그리고 부산에서 알게 된 미국인 친구가 캘리포니아에 대해서 말해주고 좋은 인상 가지게 되어서 관심 생겼다

 

미국비자 말고 진행중인 비자가 또 있는지

✅ 없다

 

인턴십하면서 가지게 될 가장 이점들은

✅ 물류 업계에 대한 이해도와 영어 실력

 

건강 상태 괜찮은지

✅ 괜찮다

 

만약 코로나로 상황이 악화되어 여행이 불가해진다면 온라인 인턴십도 괜찮은지, 대면만 고집하는지

✅ 상황이 안되는 거라면 시작은 온라인으로 하더라도 대면으로 끝마치고 싶다

미국 비자 받아본 적 있는지

✅ 이스타 비자(관광)

 

미국에 와본 적 있는지

✅ 환승할 때 공항만 3-6시간 이런 식으로 세군데 가봤다

 

미국에 왔을 때 가장 어려울 것 같은 점은

✅ 영어

 

미국에 왔을 때 기대한 것과 다르다면

✅ 일본, 칠레에 살았을 때도 기대했던 점과 달랐던 부분들이 있었고 반대로 기대치못한 좋은 점도 많았다. 괜찮다

 

인턴십 끝나고 계획

✅ 한국 돌아가서 서울에서 물류 관련 직업 구할 거임

 

 

이 외에도 상당히 많은 이야기를 나눈 거 같은데 아무튼 에이전시에서 준 예상 질문들도 대략 이런 질문들이었고 이 정도 대답할 수 있으면 큰 문제 없을 거 같다. 계속 웃으면서 수다떨듯 이야기할 수 있는 면접이었고 이제 대사관 면접 남은 거 한 번에 잘 통과하기를!
